Is 2 Buck Chuck Wine Good for America?

bottles blank label

Here in Vermont we now have a Trader Joe’s store. It has many good and healthy traits to its offerings and I applaud them for it. I do question, however, the greater effects of Two Buck Chuck wine. It is glamorized – as many alcoholic beverages are – as a way for everyone to enjoy good wine in a social setting. However, research has shown (Kerr and Greenfield) that most alcoholic beverages are not purchased by social drinkers, but by those who are alcohol dependent. It was bad enough when carton wine became available at $3.99 and $4.99 and now whole bottles of wine at $2.00? (Just checked it out at new TJ’s in Vermont and it’s really $2.99 – but that doesn’t change the blog). To me it spells disaster. What do you think?

Very cheap alcohol has been a blight on our society and others before. History tells us it is a bad idea. I have trouble welcoming a company that is bringing to Vermont a bad product and, plain and simply, a completely bad idea. I expect better *from* TJ’s and better for Vermonters!

Now, what do we do about this set up for failure?

  2. I have to say I never thought of it that way. But I agree 100%! It is sad to say most of the people buying do not realize they are dependent.
